Understand Social Algorithms

Algorithms are something that is mentioned alot in the press and media, but, generally people misunderstand what they are.

At times they have become a digital “boogyman”, being responsible for all sorts of misdeeds. However, in all things knowledge is power and the truth is generally in the details.

So what is an algorithm?

According to the lovely people at Techopedia.com

“An algorithm is a step by step method of solving a problem. It is commonly used for data processing, calculation and other related computer and mathematical operations.
An algorithm is also used to manipulate data in various ways, such as inserting a new data item, searching for a particular item or sorting an item.”

So when it comes to all social media feeds there is an algorithm that will solve the “problem” of what updates and content to put into your feed.

For sharing and being successful on social media this is a vital thing to understand.

As an example Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram are all currently, at the date of publication, using their algorithms to promote video content and paid for content over organic pictures and text posts.

This means if you share a video on LinkedIn, it will be more likely to appear in the feeds of your audience over just a plain text post.

Do your research and think about how you will engage and post on social media in the future.

Always be thinking value

When Engaging in social media what you want to be focusing on is providing value.

We have been there, we follow a page or a twitter account because we think it will be great, however, all you get is spammed with some of the worst, useless stuff and before long you have unfollowed.

What was going on here, was simply the owner of the page or twitter handle was thinking about themselves rather than their audience. Serve to your audience first, sell second.

So when it comes to social media, before you post anything you have to ask yourself, does this provide real value to my audience? A no, silence or an umm, will probably tell all the story that you need to know. So do not share.

So what does generally add value to your audience? Essentially this will come down to who is in your audience and what you specialise in recruitment wise. Things that add real value are always career advice, hiring advice and industry news.
